The 2025 edition of Brazil’s Mega da Virada lottery ended the year by establishing a new revenue record and channeling substantial resources to federal programs. The draw, held annually as part of the Mega-Sena system, reached a total revenue of R$ 3.05 billion and helped finance several strategic policy areas under the federal government’s social funding framework.

Caixa Loterias, which operates the federal lotteries under Caixa Econômica Federal, will transfer R$ 1.1 billion from this edition of Mega da Virada to social initiatives. These funds will support areas such as sports, culture, social security and public safety. Most of the transfers follow the allocation criteria established in Brazil’s federal lottery legislation, which governs how proceeds from the game return to public programs.

Distribution of Funds and Prize Activity

The distribution data shows that social security received R$ 528 million from the special draw, followed by public safety with R$ 299 million. Sports programs were allocated R$ 215 million, and cultural initiatives received R$ 88 million. The structure of the popular lottery allowed these transfers to occur while maintaining the prize incentives that shape public participation at the end of the calendar year.

The 2025 draw ended with six bets matching all six numbers and securing the top prize. Each winning bet received R$ 181.8 million. The winning numbers were 09, 13, 21, 32, 33, and 59. Three of the bets were placed at physical lottery outlets in Ponta Porã, João Pessoa, and Franco da Rocha, while the remaining three came through Caixa’s electronic betting channels.

The prize pool of R$ 1.09 billion drove significant activity through Caixa’s network, both physical and digital. The volume of participation prompted Caixa to shift the draw from the evening of December 31 to the morning of January 1, 2026. Caixa reported that 112 million bets were registered for the contest, including more than 30 million on the final day of the year. According to iGaming Brazil, almost all of the winners who matched all six numbers have already claimed their prizes, including those placed through electronic channels designated for Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In the Franco da Rocha pool, 12 of the 18 winning shares had been claimed, leaving six winners yet to withdraw.

Retail Network Impact and Online Participation

Beyond the transfer of funds to federal programs, the 2025 Mega da Virada had wider commercial implications across the national lottery system. The cumulative revenue of R$ 3,052,431,720.00 highlighted the importance of retail involvement in Brazil’s lottery network. Estimates indicate that lottery retail outlets contributed 75 percent of total wagers, equivalent to R$ 2,289,323,790.00. The remaining 25 percent, or R$ 763,107,930.00, was generated through online channels via the Loterias Online website and mobile application. This composition illustrated how the physical network remains relevant alongside growing digital adoption.

Retail outlets in Brazil benefited from the legal commission structure governing Mega da Virada. Operators earned 8.61 percent on physical bets and 4 percent on online bets. When applied to the distribution of wagers, these commissions corresponded to approximately R$ 197,110,778.32 from in-store betting activity and R$ 30,524,317.20 from internet wagers. The retail chain therefore generated an estimated R$ 227,635,095.52 during the 2025 draw period. With 13,136 authorized outlets nationwide, individual lottery locations averaged approximately R$ 17,329.10 from Mega da Virada.

Retailers also earned commissions from betting pools, known as bolão, where they receive 35 percent of the commission cost associated with pooled participation. The bolão structure continued to play a role in group wagering behavior and supported collaborative betting within the lottery environment.

The Mega da Virada draw involved more than the transfer of funds to public programs and the payment of prizes to bettors. More than R$ 528 million was allocated to social security contributions, and R$ 131 million was paid in income tax. Caixa itself reported R$ 292 million for the lottery drawings. The retail network’s R$ 227.6 million in revenue reinforced its importance as a commercial participant within the system.
