A judge has ordered a psychological evaluation of the man accused of killing two and injuring six people at a tribal casino in Texas in September, after he pleaded not guilty.
On Wednesday, Keryan Rashad Jones, 34, pleaded not guilty to several charges, including multiple capital murders and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
venue was at full capacity for a promotional night
Jones is accused of opening fire outside Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino in Eagle Pass at approximately 11:45pm on September 27 when the venue was at full capacity for a promotional night in which cash prizes and a Mercedes-Benz E350 were being given away in a raffle.
The prizes took a back seat when Jones allegedly opened fire. One of the victims was retired US Customs and Border Protection agent Marcus Antley, a well-respected Eagle Pass community figure.
Jones allegedly fled Lucky Eagle that night in a black pickup and led authorities on a multiagency 200-mile chase. Police stopped Jones and his vehicle in Wilson County before subduing him with a taser and taking him into custody.
The ex-San Antonio National Guardsman appeared via Zoom Wednesday for his arraignment. According to reports, Jones’ attorney requested the court order “evaluations for competency to stand trial” and also whether Jones “was legally insane at the time of the shooting.”
The judge granted the psych test and scheduled another hearing for Jones on February 2 to consider “a potential sanity evaluation.”
The suspect’s attorney stated that Jones has been on suicide watch since he was taken into custody.
