ELMONT, NY — Home advantage didn’t favor the New York Islanders, who fell for the fourth time in five games during their seven-game homestand, with a 4-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on Sunday afternoon at UBS Arena.
Tom Wilson scored twice and provided an assist for the Capitals, while the Islanders (13-10-3, 29 points) struggled against Capitals goalie Logan Thompson, who made 30 saves. New York managed only five goals over their last five games, with three coming in Friday’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.
Ilya Sorokin, who inadvertently assisted Wilson’s second goal with an errant pass in the second period, stopped 14 shots from the Capitals. His mistake became crucial, as Bo Horvat eventually scored for New York with 6:17 left in the game. Aliaksei Protas and Alex Ovechkin sealed the win with empty-net goals in the final 1:11.
After Matthew Schaefer tripped Ryan Leonard, the Capitals took an early lead with a power-play goal by Wilson just 12 seconds into the penalty.
The Islanders almost evened the score three minutes later when Ryan Pulock’s shot slipped through Thompson’s pads, but the Capitals’ goalie managed to cover the puck before it crossed the line. Mathew Barzal nearly scored with a wraparound attempt at the end of the first period, but Thompson blocked it.
Sorokin’s crucial mistake occurred with 6:02 remaining in the second period when his pass from behind the net intended for Schaefer was intercepted by Wilson, who scored into an open net. This happened after the Islanders struggled on two power plays earlier in the period, as their power-play unit continued to falter, going 1-for-34.
Horvat narrowed the Capitals’ lead with his 15th goal of the season at the 13:43 mark of the third period, scoring on a rebound from Thompson’s pads.
