A segment of New York Yankees fans would love to see Pete Alonso join their team from the Mets in free agency, similar to how the Mets secured Juan Soto over the Yankees last winter. A collaboration makes sense as the Yankees could use another big hitter alongside Aaron Judge and an upgrade at first base. The Paul Goldschmidt trial didn’t work out, but Ben Rice showed potential, even while splitting time as a catcher. However, the Yankees still have faith in Austin Wells, and Rice is expected to be the starting first baseman in 2026. Consequently, despite Alonso’s impressive 38-home-run season and setting the Mets’ home run record, he isn’t a primary target for Yankees GM Brian Cashman. “A serious run at Pete Alonso seems unlikely with Ben Rice seemingly in line to take over as the full-time first baseman,” MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch stated. The Yankees also eye two Japanese stars, Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto. At 30, Alonso seeks a seven-year deal in free agency, similar to last year, with his agent, Scott Boras. The market for power-hitting, defensively limited first basemen has declined due to the universal designated hitter. Alonso wants to stay at first base, and a seven-year, $200 million-plus deal seems excessive for a player likely to become a DH. Furthermore, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner appears hesitant to spend heavily on high-profile free agents with widespread market interest. For more on Pete Alonso, visit AMNY.com.
