Luke Weaver, the New York Yankees closer, may be activated from the injured list by Friday, according to manager Aaron Boone before Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels. Weaver has been sidelined since June 1 due to a hamstring strain and took a significant step towards returning by throwing 20 pitches during a live batting practice session at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.
“It felt great,” Weaver shared. “Obviously, knocking a little bit of the cobwebs off. Trying to get the mind, trying to get the intensity of a teeny bit of adrenaline. Hard to say the adrenaline is flowing the same way a game would, but heart rate is definitely up, and the velo is good. All pitches are moving well.”
Weaver had two bullpen sessions earlier as the team carefully manages his recovery. Boone’s optimism about Weaver’s return within 24 hours indicates he is progressing quicker than the expected four-to-six-week recovery period.
Having been put back in the closer position last month due to Devin Williams’ struggles, Weaver was excelling with a 1.05 ERA, 24 strikeouts, and eight saves in 25.2 innings before his injury. Williams has performed well in Weaver’s absence, maintaining the bullpen’s strength. However, the Yankees have been under less pressure recently, being on a six-game losing streak with three consecutive shutouts. Since May 31, Williams has only given up one run in 6.1 innings, recording a 1.42 ERA and four saves.
