DraftKings CEO Jason Robins has softened his position on crypto event contracts after early positive signs. These derivatives could remain active in all 50 states despite potential Supreme Court limits on sports contracts. Volume surged 44x in early 2026, with short-duration Bitcoin now at 9-10% of leading platform totals.
SCCG Take — This highlights a regulatory hedge and volume opportunity for operators, provided they address routing and market cycle risks effectively.
DraftKings is advancing in the sports prediction market space while assessing financial event contracts tied to cryptocurrency as an additional growth channel. At the NEXTPredict Summit in New York City last week, CEO and co-founder Jason Robins signaled a shift in his view after initial positive indicators with digital currency derivatives. Robins maintains that sports betting stands as a superior product but noted lessons from the appeal of non-sports activity, chiefly short-duration Bitcoin price markets.
Financial event contracts, including timed cryptocurrency derivatives, could operate in all 50 states regardless of any adverse Supreme Court outcome on sports event contracts. Crypto contracts on the DraftKings platform route through Crypto.com rather than the company's DKeX exchange. The operator is reviewing options to internalize that volume.
According to reporting by Casino.org, cryptocurrency derivatives rank among the fastest-growing areas for prediction market operators outside sports. Eilers & Krejcik Gaming analyst Brad Allen observed, “Crypto is already big business at other exchanges. Short-duration Bitcoin is 10% of contract volume (on the top U.S. prediction market) on a trailing 30-day average basis, and 9% of Polymarket U.S. contract volume on the same basis. Poly U.S. only recently launched these markets and is now offering 5-min markets on Bitcoin.”
Timed digital currency derivative volume surged 44x in the first seven months of 2026. The expansion occurred even as prices for major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, remained largely flat during much of the period. If Bitcoin adheres to its historical four-year cycle and reaches a bottom this month, contract volume could expand further in a subsequent bull market.
The potential nationwide availability of these contracts offers DraftKings a buffer against regulatory pressure specific to sports prediction markets. Rivals have already captured share in this segment, underscoring the competitive pace. Volume metrics confirm sustained trader interest distinct from sports-driven activity.
The trajectory of Bitcoin pricing will determine near-term volume upside. DraftKings must weigh partnership structures against in-house capabilities to maximize returns from this line.
