NCAA Uniform Policy Update Permits Casino Logos on Division I Jerseys with Two Tribal Deals Signed

TL;DR — NCAA policy effective Aug. 1 allows up to three casino or sportsbook logos on DI jerseys with patches limited to four square inches. FIU partnered with non-sports-betting Miccosukee Casino while New Mexico State signed a $350,000 annual deal with a betting-enabled tribal casino. Only two programs have adopted such sponsors.

SCCG Take — Tribal casinos gain direct jersey exposure to college audiences but programs favor partners without sportsbooks. Expect selective uptake as NIL revenue grows.

The NCAA has revised its uniform standards to permit commercial patches from casinos on college athletic jerseys. Two Division I programs have executed deals with tribal casino operators as the policy takes effect.

In January the NCAA DI Cabinet approved commercial logos on uniforms for regular season play. Effective Aug. 1 all DI teams may display up to three commercial logos with patches limited to four square inches. The NCAA Uniform Patch Policy allows sponsorships from casinos, sportsbooks, and gaming entities, according to Casino.org News. Dozens of programs will wear advertisements this season yet only two have selected casino partners.

FIU Adds Miccosukee Casino Patch

Florida International University announced its sponsorship with the Miccosukee Casino & Resort this week, making the Panthers the second DI program to do so. The patch appears on football, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball jerseys.

FIU Athletic Director Scott Carr said: “This partnership is about much more than placing a logo on a jersey. It is about aligning with a community whose history, values, and impact are woven into the fabric of South Florida.”

Carr added: “Through FIU Athletics, we are proud to help amplify their story and Miccosukee Casino & Resort, which, importantly in today’s collegiate landscape, does not offer sports betting. Together, we will celebrate our shared community while creating meaningful opportunities that benefit both organizations for years to come.”

The Miccosukee Tribe operates the casino seven miles from the FIU campus in Westchester. The tribe has not entered a Class III compact with Florida and runs only Class II electronic bingo machines with no sports betting, table games, or traditional slots.

New Mexico State Deal with Inn of the Mountain Gods

New Mexico State signed a jersey patch agreement in July with the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort & Casino, owned by the Mescalero Apache Tribe. That property offers sports betting operated by Caesars Sportsbook.

The tribe pays New Mexico State $350,000 per year through the 2028-29 season. The arrangement covers men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball, and softball. By contrast Ohio State receives $15 million a year from JPMorgan for comparable patches. FIU deal terms were not disclosed.

Programs have shown measured interest in casino sponsors, favoring those without sports betting in the current collegiate environment.

Tribal operators get jersey access, but uptake is tiny and programs actively favor non-betting partners—this isn't a gold rush.

We've worked tribal gaming for decades. This NCAA patch policy is a door, not a floodgate. Two deals—both tribal, one explicitly no sportsbook—tell you programs are cautious and communities split. For tribal operators eyeing college audiences, brand alignment and local ties matter more than checkbook size. Smart operators see this.

SCCG angle: SCCG has deep tribal relationships and knows the compliance, community, and regulatory nuances that make or break these deals. If you're a tribal operator considering jersey sponsorships or a program vetting gaming partners, we connect you to the right operators, navigate state compacts, and structure deals that respect both NCAA guardrails and community values.
