SCCG Take — Sequential recovery signals resilience for operators. Track event-driven volatility closely in monthly data.
Macau casino gross gaming revenue fell 8.4 percent year-on-year in July to US$2.51 billion. Data from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau put the monthly total at MOP20.26 billion.
The year-to-date aggregate reached MOP147.16 billion. That represents a 4.4 percent increase over the prior-year period. July results rose 9.4 percent from June figures of MOP18.52 billion.
Analysts tied some June weakness to the FIFA World Cup 2026 held in North America from June 11 to July 19. The tournament diverted consumer attention away from Macau gambling services.
Banking group Citi said Macau daily GGR was circa 9 percent higher in the second full week of July compared to the week beginning on July 6. Distractions from the global soccer tournament had continued to fade.
Bill Hornbuckle chief executive and president of MGM Resorts International parent of Macau operator MGM China Holdings Ltd said demand for Macau gaming had recovered even before the World Cup Final on July 19.
Macau saw marginal impact from two typhoons during the month. Maysak arrived at the start and Noul near the end. Both raised only a No.3 storm signal and not the No.8 that suspends public transport.
Typhoon Noul disrupted Macau International Airport flights and transport to and from Hong Kong Macau’s second-largest source market for tourists. The storm also led to suspension of some ferry services from Guangdong province a key source market.
The figures as reported by GGRAsia show monthly volatility from sports events and weather even as sequential growth returned.
