For years, age checks in online gambling have been treated as a necessary hurdle—a compliance step operators must satisfy before allowing players to deposit, wager, or withdraw. But as a wave of new global regulations approaches in 2026, something bigger is happening. Age assurance is no longer simply about preventing underage play. It is becoming one of the foundational pillars of digital trust, reshaping how operators think about safety, transparency, and the overall player experience.
The shift is being driven by regulators across the globe, in all converging on a similar expectation: operators must be able to prove, not just assume, that their users are old enough to participate in age-restricted digital services. And not just at onboarding, but throughout the entire player lifecycle.
For iGaming operators, this raises a familiar tension. How do you meet rising legal obligations without compromising the fast, frictionless, high-engagement experience your best players expect?
The answer lies in a new generation of age assurance technologies—ones designed not to interrupt gameplay, but to enhance it.
The Changing Role of Age Assurance
Historically, operators have had to choose between weak solutions that created minimal friction (like self-reported age fields) and strong solutions that created too much of it (like document uploads). Neither option was ideal, and neither aligned well with the nuanced realities of digital gambling, where identity fraud, account sharing, and minor access continue to present persistent risks.
Today, however, regulators are demanding more than checkboxes or document scans. They expect a layered approach—one that accounts for accuracy, privacy, fairness, and user experience all at once. Age assurance is no longer a single step but part of a continuous trust-building ecosystem that helps operators confidently determine who their users are, whether they meet legal requirements, and whether they present risks to the platform.
And importantly, it must be done without alienating legitimate, adult players who want to get in, get playing, and stay immersed.
What Modern Age Assurance Looks Like in Practice
During Liminal’s Redefining Age Assurance Demo Day, Aware CTO Dr. Mohamed Lazzouni demonstrated exactly what the next generation of age assurance looks like through the lens of a common iGaming scenario. Rather than asking a player to stop and photograph their ID, or manually enter sensitive details, the system uses a brief, consent-based facial capture to estimate whether the user appears to meet the required age—18+, 21+, or beyond.
The power of this approach is not just in its accuracy, but in its invisibility. The user initiates a purchase, like for example, adding gaming credits. Behind the scenes, the operator’s policy triggers an age check. The player simply grants permission, looks at the camera for a moment, and receives an immediate determination: they meet the age requirement, and their purchase can move forward.
There is no waiting. No document upload. No manual review. No disruption to gameplay.
This shift from intrusive verification to real-time age estimation represents a major evolution for the industry. It enables operators to confidently comply with age-related regulations while maintaining the fast, low-friction experiences that players value.
Privacy, Consent, and Fairness: The Non-Negotiables
Of course, age assurance is not just a technical challenge, it is also an ethical and privacy challenge. Players, regulators, and civil society groups all want assurances that biometric data is handled responsibly, transparently, and securely.
During the demo Q&A, Mohamed addressed this head-on. It’s important that biometric data is never collected without explicit user consent, and retention policies are configurable—some customers may require deletion within 24 hours, others within 30 days, and still others maintainlonger retention only when necessary for audits or investigations. The principles of data minimization, controlled access, and responsible storage should be baked into the system’s design.
Fairness is equally critical. Age estimation must work consistently across demographics, skin tones, genders, and age brackets. That requires not only diverse, stratified training data but ongoing refinement and bias mitigation. Mohamed emphasized that fairness is not a “check the box” activity—it is an ongoing commitment, revisited throughout the lifecycle of the solution.
For operators, this level of transparency matters. Regulators around the world are beginning to require independent testing, ongoing monitoring, and demonstrable evidence that age assurance systems perform equitably. Vendors who cannot meet those standards simply won’t be viable partners in the years ahead.
What Operators Should Look for in a Future-Proof Solution
As the regulatory environment evolves, operators must think not just about solving today’s compliance challenges but anticipating tomorrow’s. A future-proof age assurance system should be configurable, adaptable, and capable of evolving alongside regulations, fraud tactics, and player expectations.
It should offer the flexibility to adjust age thresholds, integrate with other biometric signals, combine age estimation with document verification when needed, and layer in capabilities such as liveness detection or deduplication to detect account misuse or attempted circumvention.
Most importantly, it should protect legitimate players from unnecessary friction. Successful operators know that the moment compliance becomes an obstacle, players will churn. The best age assurance flows are the ones players hardly notice, yet still deliver the confidence and certainty regulators demand.
The Opportunity Ahead
Age assurance is not simply about preventing underage gambling. It is about creating a safer, more trusted, more transparent ecosystem for all players. It is about allowing regulators to see clear, defensible evidence that operators are doing their part. It is about protecting the industry’s reputation and reducing costly compliance failures. And it is about delivering a modern digital experience that aligns with what consumers expect from every online service they use.
By embracing forward-looking biometric technologies like age estimation, combined thoughtfully with verification, liveness checks, and privacy-first controls, operators can turn a regulatory requirement into a strategic advantage.
This is the future of responsible iGaming. And it’s already here.
