Apple ProVision and the Future of Sports Engagement

Our newsletter serves as your guide, offering insights, industry updates, and insider knowledge to keep you ahead of the curve in every facet of the gaming industry. The merging of virtual reality (VR) and online sports betting blur the lines between real-world events and virtual environments. We will share our thoughts around the launch of the Apple Vision Pro and what the future of sports betting could look like.

Apple Vision Pro

The recent launch of Apple Vision Pro on 2/2/2024 has sparked excitement worldwide. Designed with various applications spanning across multiple industries, this launch enters a new era between developers, operators, consumers, and app stores. Sports content was highlighted during the Apple Pro Vision launch and the use cases for gamification and gambling are endless. Apple Vision Pro has generated significant buzz, prompting discussions among sports fans and industry experts alike about its potential impact on the future of sports viewing and betting.

Sports Content, Data, and Education

The learning curve associated with using VR devices and technology platforms is bound to happen. Users must familiarize themselves with new hardware, software interfaces, and navigation methods. Sports fans are accustomed to going to content apps (ie.ESPN, CBS Sports, Fox Sports, Bleacher Report) and sports betting apps (Draft Kings, FanDuel, Caesars, BetMGM, Fanatics). We are still in an environment where various apps for sports betting and content are disjointed through affiliate and various marketing/content deals. We still see operators integrating content with media brands and/or developing content in-house but it has not reached a point where this experience is fully optimal for the user. Introducing betting to VR experiences is likely premature, similar to introducing cashless to the brick and mortar casino. Although it is a logical next step, adoption challenges are likely. A future where we focus on content, licensing/IP, developer partners, AdTech, and integrating AI will allow users to have the best of their apps in this “spatial universe”.

Apple Vision Pro users can customize their preferences by following or unfollowing teams, leagues, and sports using the “My Sports” feature. They can reorder topics, view scores, schedules, highlights, and stories related to their favorite team. Additionally, users can receive notifications about teams they follow and can customize their experience. This is just the tip of the iceberg. As operators and developers invest more resources in “spatial computing” imagine a user shopping betting lines across multiple operators, not needing to close and open apps. Users could essentially be in a world where they receive the best generated betting line or “sponsored promotional bets” based on the content they are experiencing. This is one of a million use cases we can dive into as we enter the next generation of gaming.

However, it’s important to note that the integration of betting and VR would depend on various factors. These factors are very similar to when there was a shift from brick & mortar gambling to online. The AR/VR element adds another layer of complexity.

1)     Regulatory: sports betting is subject to strict regulations in many jurisdictions. Ensuring compliance with gambling laws, age restrictions, and responsible gaming practices becomes even more critical in a virtual environment. Authentication processes like geo-location and ID verification will need to adapt from the traditional online platform.

2)     Integration/Data Integrity: Ensuring seamless integration with sports betting platforms, real-time data feeds, and payment systems presents technical challenges such as latency, bandwidth requirements, and compatibility issues.

3)     User Experience and Accessibility: Designing intuitive user interfaces that take into account the ease to place bets, social interaction, live streaming, bet slips, and access to funds to shop and do as the users pleases.

4)     Collaboration among stakeholders, including technology providers, sports leagues and regulators, is essential for addressing the challenges associated with regulated gambling in VR/AR. Establishing industry standards, best practices, and regulatory frameworks can help mitigate risks and promote responsible innovation.

5)     Consumer Protection: implementing features such as age verification, setting deposit limits, providing access to support resources for problem gambling, and promoting responsible gaming messages within VR environments. Working with advertisers and marketers to avoid inappropriate advertising to users.

Conclusion

As fans explore virtual worlds filled with live data, interactive features, and personalized insights, the potential for betting and customer interaction is truly incredible. For operators/developers/technology providers, the integration of sports data into virtual reality (VR) represents a leap forward for the world of sports betting. By blending real-time data feeds, interactivity, and personalized insights within virtual environments, we’re not only enhancing the betting experience but also paving the way for a new era of customer interaction. However, it’s critical to recognize that we’re just scratching the surface of what’s possible. The potential for growth and differentiation is applicable to so many different technology providers that interact in the gambling space. We are excited for what is next!
