At SCCG we continue to educate our client partners by discussing trends focused on betting, gaming, content, and media. This segment takes a deeper look into trends specific to the game developer community. Coverage includes; 1) impact of generative AI 2) the new wave of talent poised to innovate 3) Illustrate the value of game dynamics across the betting and gaming industry.

Generative AI

The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on gaming narratives continues its transformation. By analyzing player choices and behaviors, AI has the capability to customize the storyline according to each individual’s preferences. This personalization ensures that no two players will have identical story experiences, enhancing the replay value of games significantly.

The implementation of AI in dynamic storytelling introduces various elements such as moral dilemmas, branching narratives, and unexpected plot twists, all of which are influenced by the choices players make throughout the game. This level of narrative adaptability extends engagement beyond the initial playthrough, as the experience evolves based on the unique decisions made by each player.

The trend of game developers investing less in employees and more in artificial intelligence (AI) suggests a shift in resource allocation within the gaming industry. This strategic move might involve reducing expenditures on human workforce, including hiring and retaining staff, while directing more resources toward the development and integration of AI technologies.

Transformative Shift

In recent years (days), the gaming industry continues to face transformative shifts, and one notable aspect has been the prevalence of layoffs across various gaming companies and streaming platforms. After widespread job cuts in 2022 and 2023, many companies are now targeting select projects and divisions as they re-priorities their resources.  Although studios and big tech experience a restructuring, these layoffs lead to the dispersal of talented individuals who, in turn, could contribute to the growth of smaller studios or startups. This can foster innovation as experienced developers bring fresh perspectives and ideas to new projects.

Notable shifts within the industry:

We have seen an increase in teaming up with other studios, leveraging shared resources, or working with publishers to gain access to larger audiences and marketing channels. Non-traditional entertainment companies (Netflix), spanning video, sports, music, social media, fashion, and ecommerce, are expected to further venture into the gaming industry. This expansion will take shape through various means such as strategic mergers and acquisitions, in-house investments, the development of intellectual property (IP), and infrastructure enhancement, as well as forming key strategic partnerships. Media brands like TikTok are prioritizing instant gaming with a focus on both mini games and cloud games. Although games on these platforms have typically been hypercasual, there’s now focus on hybrid-casual titles. These games monetize through a combination of ads and in-app purchases (IAPs). The expectation is that these games will shift non-paying users into paying customers.
