Ensuring responsible gambling has become paramount for operators and players, with authorities recognizing the need to protect vulnerable individuals and maintain sector integrity.
Regulatory Updates
The Uganda National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) is actively strengthening gambling regulations. Proposed amendments to the Gambling Act, particularly sections 3 and 4 of the Lotteries and Gaming Act focus on player protection and responsible gambling.

Responsible Gaming Program: A comprehensive initiative integrating treatment, counseling, public awareness, education, training, and research on gambling and problem gambling. The program aims to prevent the adverse effects of gaming in Uganda and ensures gaming companies align with community expectations while operating responsibly.
Strict Advertising Standards: NLGRB will enforce stringent guidelines for gambling advertisements, preventing misleading marketing and promoting responsible content.
Player Identification Verification: To prevent underage gambling and protect vulnerable individuals, all players must undergo thorough age and identity verification before participating in any gambling activities. A minimum age of 25 years will be strictly enforced for entering gambling premises.
Financial Transaction Monitoring: Online gambling platforms must closely monitor financial transactions to detect suspicious or excessive gambling behaviors, addressing potential problem gambling and money laundering.
Public Awareness Campaigns: NLGRB actively promotes responsible gambling through awareness campaigns, including:
Responsible Gambling Helpline: A toll-free helpline offering support and guidance to individuals facing gambling-related issues, staffed by trained counselors for 10 hours a day, 5 days a week.
Educational Initiatives: Collaborating with schools and educational institutions, NLGRB introduces responsible gambling awareness programs to educate students and young adults about potential risks
Collaboration with Industry Stakeholders: NLGRB engages with gambling operators, industry experts, and stakeholders to foster a collaborative approach to responsible gambling, facilitating the sharing of best practices and implementing effective player protection measures.
