Analyzing Thailand’s Gambling Statistics

By Kent Jenkins - Director SCCG ASIA

The statistics show Thailand is very passionate about gambling, with close on 60% of the population (15yrs+) engaged in gambling activities such as football games, online casino, government lottery and the underground lottery. That equates to 33 million people actively engaged in gambling.

The Government Lottery Office (GLO) holds its official draw twice a month, on the 1st and 16th. On average it issues 100 million tickets for each round with 25 million, or 45% of the population buying tickets. The majority of Thai people do not see betting on the government lottery as gambling. Thais buy both the official government lottery and the underground lotteries from Laos and Vietnam. The draw of the tickets has become so important to Thai society that the draw itself is shown live on TV and across social media platforms.

Around 2-weeks ago in late January 2023, a fruit vendor won 1st prize at 30 million baht, US$ 920,000. His chosen numbers were 297411, in fact he felt so good about these numbers he bought 5 tickets all the same. Because he bought 5 tickets he duplicated his winning 5 fold.

Money generated from the Thailand lottery sits around 140 billion baht, close on US$ 4 billion. One growing concern has been the increase in under age gamblers, from 15 to 18 year of age. In 2021 this increase stood at over 27% for this age group.

Lottery ticket face value stands at 80 baht (US$ 2.35) per ticket although some sellers look to increase the ticket cost to 30% higher. In each round the GLO target set sale of 30 million digital tickets and it is expected that by year end, digital tickets over paper tickets will reach on half the total number of tickets sold.
