The online gambling market in Peru has grown steadily in recent years, with a significant increase in players and online gaming sites. The resolution approved unanimously by the Peruvian Commission of Economy, Banking, Finance, and Financial Intelligence specifies that establishments operating as distance sports gaming rooms will have an automatic authorization process and may work exclusively as such or as an additional activity to the sale of other products or services.
The Peruvian government has updated the Online Gaming Law to address responsible gaming and money laundering prevention concerns. One of the most prominent measures in the new law is the prohibition of anonymity in remote sports gaming.
Since the beginning of 2023, players of remote sports games in Peru must register and be identified by their real name, reducing the risks of pathological gambling and the possibility of criminals using gambling to launder money. The measure will also allow for greater transparency in the online gambling market, which benefits all stakeholders.
The resolution approved on April 26 “states that anonymity thresholds cannot be admitted in gambling because they go against the purposes of the law and the prevention and fight against gambling addiction and money laundering.”
Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, in a statement on the updated Online Gambling Law, said, “The main objective is to protect Peru’s citizens from the dangers of online gambling and to guarantee the integrity of the market. The prohibition of anonymity in remote sports gaming is an important step towards achieving this goal. We hope to see a more responsible and transparent online gaming industry.”
The measure is also part of a broader effort by the Peruvian government to address problem gambling and promote a safe and responsible gaming environment for Peruvian citizens. The new law will positively impact the online gaming industry, encouraging operators to be more accountable and transparent in their approach.
While the measure has been welcomed by many in the industry, some gaming operators have expressed concern that the ban on anonymity could negatively affect the number of players participating in remote sports games.
