The UFL Conference Championships begin on Sunday, featuring the DC Defenders against the St. Louis Battlehawks. St. Louis recorded a league-high 8 wins this season, two more than DC, and sportsbooks expect them to reach the Championship Game next weekend. I agree, as the Battlehawks have the tools to outplay the Defenders on both sides.
The game starts at 6 pm ET at the Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, MO, with FOX broadcasting.
### Defenders vs Battlehawks Predictions
– St. Louis Battlehawks -2.5 (-108 at DraftKings)
I predict St. Louis will defend home ground and advance to the title game. The Battlehawks are on a 6-game winning streak, with former TCU QB Max Duggan posting a 5-0 record since leading the offense. Duggan rested last week along with key St. Louis players in a meaningless game against the Defenders.
He’ll return on Sunday, potentially having a big day running, as he rushed for 300 yards in his five starts, scoring 5 touchdowns. The Defenders allow the highest yards per rush (4.8), benefiting Duggan and All-UFL RB Jacob Saylors, who finished second in rushing yards and touchdowns, also contributing 22 catches for 245 yards.
While the ground game will be the focus, St. Louis should also succeed through the air. Duggan completes only 57% of his passes, but DC allows a high completion percentage and 12 passing TDs, tied for third-most in the league.
Despite having four All-UFL defenders, DC allowed the third-most points in the UFL this season, better only than San Antonio and Memphis, who together won 3 games.
### UFL Pass Defense Efficiency Rating – Bottom 4
Offensively, DC will rely on Jordan Ta’amu to stay competitive. Ta’amu is a possible Offensive MVP, leading in touchdown passes (17) and ranking second in yards (2,155). He has a reliable receiving trio led by Chris Rowland, and former Indianapolis Colts RB Deon Jackson spearheads the rushing.
However, St. Louis’ strong defense could pose challenges. The Battlehawks led in scoring defense, with a league-best 9 interceptions, while allowing the second-fewest yards. St. Louis also led in tackles for loss, and boasts All-UFL pass rusher and sack leader Pita Taumoepenu.
Ta’amu faces another challenge with his inefficiency. He achieved big numbers, but completed only 54% of his throws, with 2 of his 4 interceptions against the Battlehawks in their encounter.
Against a skilled team like St. Louis, missed throws and wasted chances will be costly. The Battlehawks have too much talent and favorable matchups, requiring flawless play to defeat them. I strongly favor St. Louis to cover the 2.5-point spread and secure a Championship Game spot.
### DC Defenders vs St Louis Battlehawks Odds
The best odds for the Battlehawks -2.5 is -108 at DraftKings. St. Louis is currently -142 moneyline favorites, with DC at +120 underdogs. The over/under sits at 47.5, a figure neither of their past two meetings surpassed.
Since Duggan became the quarterback in Week 5, St. Louis has won by 5+ points five times, defeating all three other UFL playoff teams at least once.
