Nikola Jokic Declines Summer Extension with Nuggets - SCCG Management

Following the unexpected dismissal of longtime head coach Mike Malone, the Denver Nuggets were seen as a strong team in the Western Conference potentially at risk of losing their star player, Nikola Jokic.

Fortunately for Denver, the team emerged as the toughest contender in the West against the eventual NBA champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, during the past postseason. The Nuggets pushed Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his team to seven games, a challenge only matched by the Indiana Pacers.

In addition to their impressive playoff performance, the Nuggets made strategic moves during the offseason to strengthen their roster for the 2025-26 season.

In an anticipated move, Nikola Jokic has chosen not to sign an extension with the team this summer.

The primary reason for declining the extension is the financial advantage Jokic would gain by waiting until next summer.

Jokic’s current contract, a five-year, $276 million extension signed in 2022, has three years remaining, with a player option worth $62.8 million in its final year, 2027-28.

By postponing extension discussions until the 2026 offseason, Jokic can add a fourth year at an additional $77 million.

While speculation about Jokic exploring options may arise, it seems most likely he will secure a substantial extension next offseason.
