The NFL stadiums with the best weather

The NFL stadiums with the best weather

With 30 stadiums used for the NFL across the USA, there’s bound to be different climates. These are the venues with the best average weather for their games.

From the hot and humid South, to the windy Midwestern states, America is a country that covers a wide range of climates. The local weather can affect various parts of your daily life, but one thing you might not think about so often is the home-field advantage that comes with living in an area with a good climate in the NFL.

Everyone is looking for ideal conditions on game day, whether you’re a fan in the stands wanting to avoid the cold, or a player on the pitch who doesn’t want to play on wet grass. It may seem like a minor detail in the grand scheme of a match-up, but bad weather could be the difference between a win and a loss in an NFL game.

To find out which teams have the biggest advantage, we’ve ranked every NFL stadium based on their average weather conditions. Venues with a fixed or retractable roof weren’t counted in our data, as they have better control over their pitches in the event of rain.

Curious to see where your team’s city ranks? Read on for our breakdown of the weather at each NFL stadium.

The coldest stadiums in the NFL

Nobody wants to be sat for a game in freezing temperatures, but some NFL stadiums are in colder cities than others. These are the venues with the lowest average temperature throughout the season:

1. Lambeau Field (Green Bay Packers)

Lambeau Field has been the home of legendary NFL players like Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers during their times with the Green Bay Packers, but they would have had to brave the cold Wisconsin weather for their games. The stadium ranks as the coldest on our list, with a shockingly low average temperature of 38.1 °F (3.3°C).

While the Packers are likely used to the cold during their home games, the icy chill of Lake Michigan is likely to throw their opponents off their game. It can be a particularly major factor once playoffs season rolls around in January, where temperatures can drop below freezing during important matchups.

1967’s “Ice Bowl” – a postseason game against the Dallas Cowboys – was the coldest game in NFL history with temperatures of -13 °F (-10 °C), while a wind chill took conditions down to a dangerous -48 °F (-44 °C).

2. Highmark Stadium (Buffalo Bills)

Over in up-state New York, the Buffalo Bills’ home turf comes a close second in our rankings of the coldest stadiums. With an average temperature of 42.1 °F (5.6 °C), Highmark Stadium frequently reaches near-freezing conditions during the NFL season.

While the Bills Mafia have learned to layer up in preparation for the low temperatures, the chill can catch players completely off-guard. The coldest Bills home game in history came against the Las Vegas Raiders in 1994, where a wind chill of -32 °F (-35 °C) blew across the field.

3. Gillette Stadium (New England Patriots)

22 miles south-west of Boston, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts is the home of the New England Patriots. In classic New England fashion, the venue can reach drastic temperatures, with conditions averaging around 42.4 °F (5.7 °C). This makes it warmer than Highmark Stadium by less than one degree.

During a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1989, kickoff temperatures had plunged to 3 °F (-16 °C). The Patriots were beaten 28-10, despite the Steelers being used to warmer conditions.

4. Empower Field at Mile High (Denver Broncos)

While Denver can reach averages of 90 °F (32.2 °C) during the peak of summer, the temperature during the NFL season is much less kind to its players. The Broncos have to brave average home-game conditions of 44.6 °F (7 °C), making Empower Field the fourth-coldest stadium in the league.

In a nail-biting playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens – since nicknamed the “Mile High Miracle” – the Broncos competed in 13 °F (-10.6 °C) temperatures, with a 2 °F (-16.7 °C) wind chill. This made it the coldest playoff game ever played in Denver, but it was also the fourth-longest NFL game in history. The Ravens earned a 38-35 victory in a match often considered the best of the 2010s.

5. Soldier Field (Chicago Bears)

Nicknamed the “Windy City”, Chicago is famous for its strong wind chill, and Soldier Field is no exception to the rule. The stadium reaches an average temperature of 45 °F (7.2 °C) across the season, earning it the final space in our top 5 coldest stadiums.

In 2008, while hosting the Green Bay Packers just days before Christmas, the field reached -2 °F (-18.8 °C), with a -13 °F (-25 °C) wind chill. This makes it the coldest game ever contested on the Bears’ home turf.

The warmest stadiums in the NFL

Warm conditions might seem like a dream come true compared to the freezing temperatures of the coldest NFL stadiums, but exercising in the hot sun can lead to exhaustion. While fans can enjoy the heat, players often have to struggle through the weather. Here are the warmest stadiums in the NFL:

1. Hard Rock Stadium (Miami Dolphins)

Florida is famous for its summer sun, making it a popular tourist destination for anyone seeking hot weather. For NFL players, however, the heat when playing the Miami Dolphins could be too much to handle. Hard Rock Stadium’s average temperature is 74.1 °F (23.3 °C), which may seem manageable, but the hottest conditions can cause serious problems for both the Dolphins and their opponents.

In 1982, the Dolphins faced the San Diego Chargers in a game with many nicknames: the “Epic in Miami”, the “Miracle That Died”, and the “Game No One Should Have Lost”. In one of the highest-scoring NFL games of the 1980s, the two teams faced off in 76 °F (24 °C) temperatures, but the 80% humidity in Miami led Kellen Winslow to remark that he had “never felt so close to death before”.

2. Raymond James Stadium (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Roughly 200 miles northwest of Miami, the Tampa Bay Bucs contest their games in the second-warmest stadium in the NFL. Raymond James Stadium reaches averages of 69.4 °F (20.7 °C) throughout the season.

The Buccaneers seem to be particularly weak in cold weather, as they had never won a game below 40 °F (4.4 °C) prior to the 2002 season. Furthermore, they couldn’t win a below-freezing game until their 2020 NFC championship game against the Green Bay Packers.

3. EverBank Stadium (Jacksonville Jaguars)

Living up to Florida’s reputation as the Sunshine State, all three of its teams finish with their home stadiums at the top of our rankings for the warmest NFL venues. EverBank Stadium sees the Jacksonville Jaguars compete in averages of 64.8 °F (18.2 °C).

In 2018, the Jaguars’ game against the New England Patriots was the warmest in franchise history, with conditions reaching 97 °F (36 °C) at kickoff. Emergency services had to remain on hand throughout the game for unusually hot weather, as the city experienced a spike in heat-related hospital admissions.

4. Levi’s Stadium (San Francisco 49ers)

Another state famous for its sun, California is home to the San Francisco 49ers, who play their games at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. With an average temperature of 57.2 °F (14 °C) across the season, it ranks as the fourth-hottest stadium in the NFL.

Their hottest regular season game ever came in 2021, when their matchup against the Seattle Seahawks was contested under conditions of 88 °F (31.1 °C).

5. Bank of America Stadium (Carolina Panthers)

Rounding out our top 5 with another Southern stadium, the Carolina Panthers are the team with the fifth-warmest venue on average in the league. The Bank of America Stadium averages a heat of 54 °F (12.2 °C) across the NFL season.

In 2025, they face a schedule with an average of 67 °F (19.4 °C) per game. This makes them one of the five teams with the hottest average fixtures of the year.

The rainiest stadiums in the NFL

Unlike other sports, the NFL will usually play through rain and snow unless a risk is posed to the fans in attendance. This can make rainy games particularly difficult for teams based in dry areas. These stadiums have the highest average rainfall each month:

1. Lumen Field (Seattle Seahawks)

The Pacific Northwest is known for its rainy climate, so it’s no surprise that Seattle’s NFL stadium sees the most rainfall each month. With 133mm on average, the wet conditions of Lumen Field can give the Seattle Seahawks a home-field advantage against their opponents.

2. Nissan Stadium (Tennessee Titans)

Located at the heart of Nashville, Nissan Stadium ranks as our second-rainiest NFL venue. Each month, an average of 90mm of rain falls on the stadium. While Tennessee isn’t particularly known for a rainy climate, the Titans still get their fair share of wet conditions throughout the regular season.

3. MetLife Stadium (New York Giants & Jets)

Although the MetLife Stadium is based in East Rutherford, New Jersey, it serves as the home ground for both the New York Giants and the New York Jets. With 81mm of rainfall each month, it’s one of the wettest stadiums on average to compete in.

4. Gillette Stadium (New England Patriots)

Elsewhere in New England, the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts also sees plenty of rain. With 80mm falling each month on average, it finishes just behind the MetLife in our top 5.

5. Bank of America Stadium (Carolina Panthers) and Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia Eagles)

To round out our list, we have a tie between the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC, and the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA. Both stadiums see an average of 79mm of rainfall each month.

The windiest stadiums in the NFL

When making a long pass in the NFL, the last thing you want is a strong wind to blow your ball off target. Some stadiums have stronger breezes than others, making it even more of a challenge for quarterbacks and wide receivers. Here are the NFL stadiums with the highest average wind speeds:

1. Soldier Field (Chicago Bears)

It should come as no surprise that the “Windy City” is home to the windiest stadium in the NFL. Soldier Field’s average wind speed of 12.9 mph is the highest of any NFL stadium, making the Chicago Bears’ home games a fight against the weather.

2. Lambeau Field (Green Bay Packers)

As well as being the coldest NFL stadium, Lambeau Field is also the second-windiest. Its average wind speeds of 12.4 mph put it in close contention with Soldier Field, but the Green Bay Packers’ home turf just about falls behind.

3. Huntington Bank Field (Cleveland Browns)

The third Midwest stadium in our top 3, Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, Ohio is also prone to high winds during NFL games. The Cleveland Browns have to deal with an average of 11.7 mph winds while playing at home.

4. Hard Rock Stadium (Miami Dolphins)

While a strong breeze might seem ideal to cool players down in the Miami sun, Hard Rock Stadium’s average wind speeds of 11.2 mph may be a little excessive. The Dolphins’ home stadium is already the hottest in America without a roof, so having such strong wind is sure to add to their weather troubles.

5. Arrowhead Stadium (Kansas City Chiefs)

Rounding out our top 5 is the home of the Kansas City Chiefs, Arrowhead Stadium. With a typical wind speed of 10.6 mph, it’s the last stadium on our list to receive a double digit average. In comparison, the stadium with the least wind is Lumen Field in Seattle, WA, which averages speeds of 4.5 mph.

The NFL stadiums with the most stable weather

Fluctuations in weather can throw a team off their game when they’re faced with conditions they’re not used to, so having a stable climate is ideal. Now that we’ve looked at the most extreme examples, let’s count down the top 5 NFL stadiums with the least change across their average temperatures, wind speeds, and rainfall.

1. Levi’s Stadium (San Francisco 49ers)

Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara has the steadiest temperature of any NFL venue, with an average of 18 °F temperature fluctuation across the regular season. Its wind speeds also only fluctuate by 1.2 mph on average. Despite a massive 83.8 mm difference in average rainfall between September and January, it still tops our list with a total score of 79.02 out of 100.

2. Bank of America Stadium (Carolina Panthers)

While the Bank of America Stadium’s temperature can fluctuate as much as 30.6 °F, its rainfall and wind speed fluctuations are among the smallest in the league. Its 6 mm difference in rainfall across the season is miniscule compared to other stadiums, while it only experiences 2 mph in wind difference. This puts its overall score at 76.72 out of 100.

3. EverBank Stadium (Jacksonville Jaguars)

The Jacksonville Jaguar’s home stadium ranks at #3 on our list, with an overall score of 70.18. EverBank Stadium’s 25.2 °F temperature fluctuation is one of the smallest in the NFL, while its wind speed changes of only 1.3 mph also contribute to its high placement. Even a rainfall fluctuation of 78.7 mm isn’t enough to knock it from our top 5.

4. Raymond James Stadium (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Another Floridian stadium breaks into our list, as Raymond James Stadium takes fourth place. Despite having the third-biggest rainfall fluctuation in the NFL (97 mm), the 16.8 °F change in temperature and 3.3 mph change in wind speed make the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ home ground one of the most stable NFL climates. With a score of 62.37, it finishes three places ahead of Florida’s third NFL venue – Hard Rock Stadium.

5. Empower Field at Mile High (Denver Broncos)

Rounding out our top 5 is Empower Field at Mile High – the Denver Broncos’ home stadium. While its 32.4 °F temperature changes aren’t particularly impressive, its 23.4 mm rainfall fluctuation is the second smallest in the NFL, and wind speeds change by just 3.6 mph across the season. It finishes with a score of 61.71.

Methodology

This dataset ranks all open-air NFL stadiums, based on how often they experience different types of weather conditions, and a separate ranking with all the cities that have an NFL team. To do this, 5 factors were used. Once the data for the factors was collected, the factors were then normalised, to provide each factor with a score between 0 and 1. If data was not available, a score of 0 was given. The normalised values were then summed & multiplied, to give each location a total score out of 100. The locations were then ranked from highest to lowest, based on their total scores.

The factors used are as follows:

  • Avg Temp – The average temperature in each location, between Sept – Jan, in degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Avg Rainfall – The average monthly rainfall levels in each location, between Sept – Jan, in millimetres.

  • Air Quality – The IQAir PM2.5 index score for each city, representing the air quality levels in each city, if data wasn’t available then the nearest city with data was used.

The factors were indexed as follows:
