Ranking the top 10 Premier League title races

The inaugural Premier League season took place back in 1992/93 and there have been some dramatic battles to be crowned champions over the years.

Manchester United are the most successful team in Premier League history, lifting the trophy a record 13 times, but they have not tasted success in England’s top division since 2013.

Manchester City have been the dominant force over the last decade and their title win in 2023/24 was their eighth in PL history, while they also became the first team to finish top four seasons in a row.

We have ranked the top 10 title races in Premier League history.

10. 2007/08 – Manchester United

Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal were involved in a three-way title battle in the 2007/08 season, and it was the Red Devils who successfully defended their title and lifted the Premier League trophy for the 10th time.

Going into the final day it was between United and the Blues, as the Gunners were mathematically out of contention, and it was Sir Alex Ferguson’s side who held their nerve with a 2-0 victory over Wigan, while Chelsea drew 1-1 against Bolton.

United finished the campaign on 87 points, two ahead of Chelsea and further two clear of Arsenal in third.

9. 2009/10 – Chelsea

Chelsea managed to gain revenge on United for that 2008 defeat by beating the Red Devils to the title in 2010, with the Blues finishing on 86 points compared to the 85 of the Manchester giants.

Starting the final day just one point ahead of United, Chelsea secured their first Premier League title in style by thrashing Wigan 8-0, with Didier Drogba scoring a hat-trick that helped him win the Golden Boot.

8. 1997/98 – Arsenal

Arsenal’s first Premier League title came in 1998, the same season they also managed to complete the double, in what was Arsene Wenger’s first full campaign at the club.

The Gunners ended up one point ahead of Manchester United on 78 points, with a sensational run of form between December and May seeing Arsenal collect 45 points from a possible 51.

7. 1998/99 – Manchester United

United fans will forever remember the 1998/99 campaign, as they completed the treble by winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

In the top flight, the Red Devils went into the final match knowing a victory would secure the title and although they made life hard for themselves after going 1-0 down to Tottenham, they recovered to win 2-1.

A huge reason for United’s success was the form they showed since losing to Middlesbrough on December 19th, with the club incredibly not losing another game across all competitions.

6. 1995/96 – Manchester United

United feature again on this list as they managed to complete one of the most memorable comebacks in the 1995/96 season, snatching the title from Newcastle United.

The Magpies had established a 12-point lead in January and it looked like the trophy would be heading to St James’ Park, only for the Red Devils to chip away at the deficit and eventually finish four points clear at the top.

The season will also be remembered for Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan’s outburst after his side beat Leeds United 1-0 on April 29th, with the English tactician biting back at comments from United chief Ferguson, famously saying “I will love it if we beat them, love it”.

Unfortunately for Keegan, his side didn’t.

5. 2015/16 – Leicester City

One of the true underdog stories in sport came in the 2015/16 season when Leicester City, who had avoided relegation by just six points in 2014/15, won the title to the astonishment of the footballing world.

The Foxes, under the guidance of Claudio Ranieri, secured the trophy for the first time with two games to spare, ending up a massive 10 points clear of Arsenal in second.

Riyad Mahrez, N’Golo Kante, Jamie Vardy, Wes Morgan and Robert Huth were just a few integral members of the title-winning squad, who were 5000/1 to win the league in the ante-post betting.

4. 2021/22 – Manchester City

Manchester City have had some ding-dong battles with Liverpool in recent years and the Citizens managed to beat the Reds to the title in the 2021/22 season, finishing one point ahead of the Merseysiders on 93 points.

It came down to the final day and, at one stage, the trophy looked to be heading to Anfield when City found themselves 2-0 down at home against Aston Villa.

However, the Citizens regrouped and scored three second-half goals to secure the victory, with Liverpool’s 3-1 triumph over Wolves proving meaningless.

3. 1994/95 – Blackburn Rovers

Having won the first two editions of the Premier League, Manchester United were in the mix for a trio of titles in the 1994/95 campaign but ultimately fell short by just one point, as Blackburn Rovers memorably the spoils.

With Rovers losing 2-1 against Liverpool on the final day, the Red Devils had the opportunity to snatch the trophy, but they could only manage a 1-1 draw at West Ham.

It was Blackburn’s first league title since 1914 and the club’s first major trophy in 67 years.

2. 2018/19 – Manchester City

Manchester City and Liverpool battled throughout the 2018/19 campaign for the Premier League title but it was the Citizens who managed to come out on top by one point, finishing on 98.

The Reds only lost one league game, winning 30 and drawing the other seven, but City’s 32 victories and two draws proved to be decisive in this sensational race for glory.

1. 2011/12 – Manchester City

Arguably the greatest finish to a title race came in the 2011/12 season, when City won their first Premier League trophy at the expense of rivals Manchester United.

City had their destiny in their hands going into the final game of the season and all they had to do was beat Queens Park Rangers, who avoided relegation by just one point.

However, 2-1 down at home against the Hoops heading into stoppage-time, it seemed like the title was slipping away and United, who beat Sunderland 1-0 at the Stadium of Light, were on the verge of more glory.

But Edin Dzeko levelled things up in the 92nd minute before Sergio Aguero crashed home the winner in the 94th, sparking wild celebrations in the stands and on the pitch.

City won the title on goal difference, making it the first and only time the Premier League had been won that way.
