In a week where England’s senior team had underwhelming performances, the under-21s aimed to shine this summer. While Lee Carsley downplayed his squad’s chances of emulating past European champions of 1982 and 1984, their solid victory over a spirited Czech Republic squad suggested it might be possible.

With goals from Harvey Elliott, Charlie Cresswell, and Jonathan Rowe, England secured a strong position in Group B after a brief Czech comeback. A win against Slovenia, who lost 3-0 to Germany in their first match, would secure a quarter-final spot.
