The Boring Company, owned by Elon Musk, has been fined nearly $500,000 for significant environmental violations.
Water inspectors discovered that during a tunneling project to create an “underground highway,” the company allegedly damaged the sewer system and county manholes by dumping waste, drilling fluids, and wastewater.
The Clark County Water Reclamation District (CCWRD) reported multiple instances where workers ignored instructions to stop the illegal waste dumping.
A cease-and-desist letter detailed how, after a short period of compliance, a manager assumed inspectors had left and resumed the illegal activities.
A violation notice obtained by Fortune indicated that 12 cubic yards of “drilling mud, drilling spoils, and miscellaneous solid waste” from the company’s facilities required several CCWRD crews for cleanup.
Another document from Fortune shows only one other company has received a fine of over $100,000 from the CCWRD.
In September, a meeting was held with Boring Company executives and CCWRD, where the company acknowledged responsibility for the issue.
Boring also agreed to meet “certain conditions” before continuing to tunnel into other areas.
Clear Signs of Trouble
Months ago, the company began digging in front of the Wynn Resort casino.
Soon after, the Boring Company released a video showing the machine emerging from the ground near the casino.
Elon Musk expressed that the tunnel’s purpose is to enable quicker travel through the city for visitors and residents alike.
The Boring Company claimed that at its peak, over 4,000 people were transported through the Las Vegas Loop, significantly reducing travel time.
Controversy Over Safety
The project has faced multiple controversies from the start.
A 2024 Fortune report stated that during digging, the company uncovered the foundations of two pillars, resulting in several penalties.
The Boring Company is still disputing Health and Safety violations from 2023, where employees reportedly suffered chemical burns.
