Coach Aurelio Vidmar supports young talent and new additions as City triumphs over Melbourne Victory, securing a second championship.

Melbourne experienced contrasting emotions on 5 May 2024. After an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Paul Izzo, Melbourne Victory knocked Melbourne City out of the A-League Men finals in a tense penalty shootout. Reflecting City’s high expectations, it marked their toughest season in recent memory, barely making it to the playoffs after dismissing coach Rado Vidošić early in the season and missing the grand final for the first time in five years. Several club icons were set to depart due to league-wide budget cuts. It was a necessary setback for the club.

However, the downturn has ended, and growth has resumed. Referee Adam Kersey signaled the end before a record audience at AAMI Park, and players celebrated joyously. Coach Vidmar was embraced by director of football Michael Petrillo and assistants Scott Jamieson and Paul Pezos. On Saturday night, City achieved a 1-0 victory over Victory, claiming Australia’s championship for the second time.
