Welcome to The Long Wave. I’m stepping in for Nesrine today. Although this newsletter isn’t intended to be a weekly summary of racism, sometimes events are so severe that they compel us to address them. Recently, there have been numerous prominent instances of online racial abuse directed at footballers, alongside several on-field incidents causing match interruptions as victims sought, yet struggled to receive, support from authorities on the field. This week, I want to examine the increase in abuse within football to understand if the sport’s governing bodies and social media companies can uphold their commitments to combat racism.
