The New York Rangers’ retool is now underway. Following a letter about their retooling plans, the Rangers traded Artemi Panarin to the Los Angeles Kings for prospect Liam Greentree and conditional third- and fourth-round draft picks. Despite Panarin being a top scorer for six seasons, his contract constraints limited options. Chris Drury, the Rangers’ president and general manager, explained the trade and the team’s future direction. Panarin’s no-movement clause and preference for Los Angeles influenced the deal.
This trade follows the move of Carson Soucy to the New York Islanders. When asked about the team’s future, Drury emphasized a retool, not a rebuild, with no set timeline but the goal of returning to contention quickly. The Rangers are focused on building around key players. Drury valued Greentree, acquired in the trade, more than a future first-round pick, citing his attributes.
The Rangers’ core includes Adam Fox, Igor Shesterkin, J.T. Miller, and Mika Zibanejad, though they’re aging, with the youngest being 27. The team’s future relies on younger players like Alexis Lafrenière and Braden Schneider stepping up. Drury expressed confidence in them despite some underperformance this year. He believes in their potential and the coaching staff’s ability to develop them.
Drury remains optimistic about the team’s players and plans to build around them while making better decisions moving forward.
