Two of Europe’s heavyweights go head-to-head on Tuesday night as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich clash in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid demonstrated they remain a force to be reckoned with by sweeping aside Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate in the previous round.
Bayern Munich, meanwhile, cruised into the quarter-finals with a 10-2 aggregate demolition of Atalanta.
German giants Bayern enter this tie as odds-on favourites to qualify, and the bookmakers are expecting them to strike first in the Spanish capital on Tuesday night, with an away win trading around 6/5.
That said, a case could be made for either side in this blockbuster encounter, so I’m going to sidestep the 1X2 betting and focus instead on a player-based selection.
Federico Valverde is priced at 17/20 with Ladbrokes to commit at least one foul during Tuesday’s first leg – odds that looks too good to ignore.
Valverde hit a hat-trick against Man City at the Bernabeu in the previous round, but he’s also not one to shy away from the dirty work.
In fact, Valverde has committed a combined total of six fouls across his last four Champions League appearances, including four in a home clash with Benfica.
That tendency has also been on show in domestically – Valverde has been penalised at least once in six of his last eight La Liga outings, picking up a red card along the way.
Now set to come up against a free-flowing Bayern Munich side, Valverde looks like solid value to overstep the mark at least once on Tuesday night.
Typically deployed on the right side of a flat midfield four, Valverde is likely to find himself crossing paths with Bayern’s Luis Diaz.
The former Liverpool winger has drawn an average of 1.38 fouls per game in the Bundesliga this season, which further strengthens the case for backing Valverde to commit one foul or more in this clash.
