Mets’ Jonah Tong Dominates Double-A, Promotion Appears Imminent | AmNewYork - SCCG Management

The New York Mets’ major league starting rotation is struggling, but one of their top prospects is excelling in the minors. Jonah Tong, the Mets’ No. 2 prospect and No. 52 overall, pitched brilliantly on Tuesday for the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies against the Somerset Patriots, the Yankees’ minor-league affiliate. The 22-year-old right-hander threw five scoreless innings, giving up only three hits, striking out eight, and walking two.

His performance has brought his season ERA down to an impressive 1.58 over 97 innings, leading Double-A with 154 strikeouts. Tong has been virtually unhittable in his last four starts, conceding only one run over 18.1 innings with 29 strikeouts. A promotion to Triple-A is likely, keeping him on track for a potential 2026 MLB debut, offering much-needed support to the Mets’ faltering rotation.

Except for David Peterson, Mets starters haven’t completed six innings in a game since June 7. Clay Holmes’ performance has declined as he adjusts from reliever to starter, doubling his previous innings high. Frankie Montas is struggling with a 6.68 ERA and has given up 12 runs in his last eight innings; he remains scheduled for Saturday in Milwaukee, possibly following an opener.

Kodai Senga has allowed three or more runs in his last three starts, lasting just four innings last Saturday. Sean Manaea, back to full strength after an oblique injury, surrendered five runs in one inning during Monday’s loss to the Cleveland Guardians.

As Paul Blackburn and Tylor Megill work their way back from injuries, the Mets have prospects Nolan McLean and Brandon Sproat waiting in Triple-A, but there are no plans for their promotion yet.
