Key Storylines
Recent form
Calgary enters Week 9 after a 23–21 home loss to Montreal in Week 8. That loss snapped a three‑game win streak. The Stampeders are 5-2 so far this season and in second place in the West behind 6-1 Saskatchewan. Ottawa is mired in a 1–6 slump to start this season. They are coming off a 30–15 loss to Hamilton in Week 7 and had a Week 8 bye. The Redblacks enter this game at 0-3 at home on the season and will look to end that home losing streak here.
Quarterback play
Calgary’s Vernon Adams Jr. is not going to dress for this game due to a head injury. In his place will be PJ Walker, who I think could surprise some people in this game. Walker was the MVP of the abbreviated 2020 XFL season that was cut short due to COVID. He has also spent time with the Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns in the NFL.
Ottawa’s Dru Brown is expected to start in this game after suffering a head injury in Week 7 against Hamilton. Brown has completed 73.1% of his passes so far this season and is an upgrade over Dustin Crum under center.
Betting Trends & H2H

- Ottawa is 1-6 straight up and 2-5 against the spread in 2025.
- The Stampeders are 5-0 ATS as underdogs this season.
- Ottawa is 0-2 ATS as favorites this season.
- Both teams have gone 3-4 on over/unders so far this year.
Stampeders vs Redblacks Model Projection
- Score Projection: Calgary 24 – Ottawa 27

Final Thoughts
The Stampeders would likely be the favorite in this game if Vernon Adams Jr. was able to suit up. But without Adams, I think the Redblacks win a close game. That being said, I think PJ Walker is going to be better than expected. Walker was great in his last non-NFL assignment with the Houston Roughnecks. In a step down in competition from the NFL, Walker should be acceptable at QB and help the Stamps cover the number to start Week 9.
