The authorities have successfully identified a John Doe found in the Mississippi River three years ago using a new analytical method.
The New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office in Missouri confirmed that the body belonged to Robert Eaton, who disappeared after leaving Caesars Southern Indiana casino in February 2022. Eaton’s body was discovered by a member of the public about four months after he went missing, but identification took three years.
A key development was when investigators sought the expertise of an anthropology professor, leading to a detailed dental analysis and inventory.
Investigators then found that individuals identified as possible relatives of John Doe through genealogy had posted about a missing family member matching the same demographic on social media.
These potential relatives agreed to interviews and provided samples for analysis in April, resulting in a positive identification. While investigations into Eaton’s death continue, his family expressed relief and satisfaction with the discovery of a technique that could solve other cases.
