Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez Involved in Major Gambling Operation Scandal - SCCG Management

In a surprising development, Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez was arrested Thursday morning, June 5, on charges related to a large illegal gambling network. Lopez, Florida’s first Hispanic sheriff, was quickly removed from his position and handcuffed after an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). The 44-year-old faces charges of racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering, accused of using his position to support and grow an illegal gambling operation, amassing millions in the process.

Lopez’s arrest has shocked the community, especially given his public status. Serving since 2020, his criminal activities allegedly began with accepting campaign donations and personal payments from those linked to the gambling ring. Over time, Lopez’s involvement reportedly deepened, using his authority to protect the operation from law enforcement. Prosecutors claim he not only covered up the gambling activities but also expanded them in Osceola and Lake Counties.

The illegal ventures, reportedly generating over $20 million, were based at the Eclipse Social Club in Kissimmee, Florida, which later turned into a Mexican restaurant. The club was known for operating slot machines and promoting lottery activities, even advertising on social media. Videos on the club’s TikTok account depicted it as a “casino” with gaming machines and constant promotions, where Lopez allegedly played a crucial role in shielding the operation from law enforcement.

According to WFTV 9, four others have been charged alongside Lopez. Ying Zhang, Sharon Fredrick, Sheldon Wetherholt, and Carol Cote are accused of participating in or supporting the illegal activities. Wetherholt is identified as the club’s manager, with others, including Lopez and Zhang, involved in money laundering to hide the gambling profits.

Operating between June 2022 and August 2024, the scheme involved illegal gambling activities, including slot machines and a lottery system aimed at attracting gamblers. Authorities indicate further arrests may follow as investigations continue.

The arrest has sparked strong reactions from political and law enforcement officials. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis quickly suspended Lopez, appointing Florida Highway Patrol Central Region Chief Christopher Blackmon as interim sheriff. State attorney general James Uthmeier called it a “solemn day” for the state and law enforcement, emphasizing the importance of integrity in public office.

Lopez’s situation marks a significant scandal for the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office and Florida law enforcement. Uthmeier highlighted the breach of trust Lopez’s actions represent. Lopez had already faced legal challenges earlier this year, including a civil lawsuit about excessive force by his deputies.

The investigation into Lopez’s activities continues, with more arrests expected. FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass stated the case shows a serious betrayal of public trust, especially for a sheriff expected to uphold the law. Glass remarked on the higher standards of integrity expected from law enforcement.

The community is left in shock, with officials like Kissimmee Mayor Jackie Espinosa expressing dismay. “It’s an unsettling moment for all of us,” Espinosa said during a Facebook Live. Other law enforcement leaders, including Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, condemned the actions, calling the allegations damaging to law enforcement’s integrity.
