Selections to watch

Mohamed Salah

Liverpool have already claimed the title in the Premier League this season and, barring any surprises or better said miracles, Salah will be crowned as the league’s top scorer.

With three rounds left in the season, the Egyptian winger sits at 28 goals scored, five more than the other closest player on the list, Alexander Isak. While Salah might not play in all games since Liverpool are already champions, it’s still hard to envision anyone overtaking him on the list of the Premier League top scorers.

Alexander Isak

With 23 goals so far in this season Alexander Isak has proven that he’s a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League. Although it is now almost impossible for the Swede to level with Salah, it is important knowledge going into next season. Also, almost impossible doesn’t mean impossible, but making up a difference of five goals in three games is highly improbable.

Erling Haaland

Coming into the season, the Norwegian phenom was the clear favourite to win the Golden Boot in the Premier League, third time in a row.

This seemed like a foregone conclusion early in the season when Haaland had 10 goals after the first five rounds, but both Man City and Haaland slowed down after the hot start and now the Norwegian sits seven goals behind Salah, with his chances of winning the award dwindling with each passing round.

Our Premier League top scorer prediction

At this point, it’s pretty clear that Mohamed Salah will be Premier League’s top scorer this season, which won’t be the first time he’s won this award:

As can be deduced from the above table, it would also continue a curious trend into a third successive year, whereby the Golden Boot winner also represents the title-winning side. It would certainly mark a drastic turnaround after the years spanning 2014-2022, none of which saw any Golden Boot winner also lift the title.

Other notable Premier League top-scorer trends

  • Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane are the only Englishmen to lift a Golden Boot this century.
  • Under the 38-game PL format (1995/96-present), the average tally from Golden Boot winners is 25.8 goals.
  • During this same period, a tally of 25 goals has been enough for the Golden Boot on 15 of a possible 29 occasions.
  • Only five of the 33 prior Premier League seasons have seen multiple winners.
