QUEENS, NY — The Mets plan to continue giving Jared Young at-bats to help the veteran left-handed hitter find his rhythm at the major-league level, as suggested by manager Carlos Mendoza. Young, 29, was called up after achieving a .926 OPS with six home runs and 23 RBI in 26 minor-league games. This marks his return to the big leagues since playing with the Chicago Cubs in 2023, after spending last season with the Doosan Bears in Korea.
Young began his major league return with a 0-for-5 record, playing in the No. 6 spot during the Mets’ game against the Chicago White Sox at Citi Field on Tuesday. Mendoza praised Young’s ability to manage the strike zone, noting that Young often finds himself in favorable hitter’s counts, which is a key strength for him.
Indeed, Young has been ahead in the count in four of his six plate appearances. During a Sunday night game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he hit a 107.1 mph fly ball to center field, covering 401 feet before being caught with a leaping grab by Andy Pages.
Mendoza commented on Young’s potential, highlighting the importance of getting him into a rhythm to achieve damage at the plate. The Mets are seeking a reliable left-handed designated hitter option due to Jesse Winker’s oblique injury. Although Brett Baty was initially considered for this role, his defensive skills at third base provide an advantage over Mark Vientos. Young can also serve as a first baseman and corner outfielder.
