Premier League 2024–25: Disappointments of the Season
As the 2024–25 Premier League campaign comes to a close, it’s time to take stock of the season’s biggest flops—be it managers, players, or clubs that failed to meet expectations. Among the most notable underperformers is Manchester United, and particularly, their manager Ruben Amorim.
After taking over from interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy in early November, Amorim has struggled to find his footing in English football. Averaging just one point per game in the league, his performance places him only slightly above the likes of Malky Mackay at Cardiff and Paul Jewell during his stints with Bradford, Wigan, and Derby—hardly flattering comparisons for the Portuguese coach.
While Amorim’s former club, Sporting CP, went on to clinch the Primeira Liga title, Manchester United have slid down to a dismal 15th-place finish under his leadership. Despite a squad brimming with expensive, seasoned internationals, Amorim has been unable to forge them into a cohesive unit. Ownership has taken much of the heat from fans and pundits alike, but on the pitch, the tactical shortcomings lie squarely on the manager’s shoulders.
Their poor form culminated in a disappointing Europa League final loss to Tottenham Hotspur—a match that further highlighted United’s lack of structure and direction. With significant rebuilding needed both in terms of tactics and mentality, Amorim faces a long road ahead if he is to turn things around at Old Trafford.
