Antonio Conte: Master of Titles, Misfit in Naples?
Could we see murals of Scott McTominay adorning walls in Naples? With Antonio Conte in charge, don’t count anything out. Known for his volatility and short tenures—even amid success—the Italian manager continues to leave a distinct mark wherever he goes, though not always a warmly received one.
Since departing from Siena in 2011 and stepping into roles with major clubs capable of serious title contention, Conte has established himself as one of the most consistent winners in football. He’s claimed league titles with Juventus, Chelsea, and Inter Milan. Now at Napoli, he’s narrowly leading his former club Inter by three points with just three matches left in the season. Remarkably, every club he’s led since 2011 has tasted silverware—except one: Tottenham Hotspur.
Perhaps Tottenham was never truly ready to claim trophies. Unlike Juventus, Chelsea, or Inter, Spurs simply don’t have a history as steeped in winning. Conte still managed respectable achievements during his 17-month spell in North London. He replaced Nuno Espírito Santo in November and guided the team to a fourth-place finish in his first season, securing a Champions League return.
And yet, despite boasting the fifth-best win percentage of any Spurs manager, his stint ended in March 2023 under heavy tension. Though Spurs were again fourth in the table at his departure, the atmosphere had grown so toxic that parting ways became unavoidable.
Now at Napoli, Conte finds himself possibly days away from another league title. But as has become familiar, while success follows him, warmth and long-term admiration from fans can often lag behind.
