How to Learn Heads-Up PLO Strategy With Solvers?

Heads-up matches tend to divide poker players. Some love them, others avoid them. No surprise there – there’s no format more dynamic. You’re forced to play wide ranges, the action never stops, and controlling your ego becomes more important than ever. Just a few minutes of indiscipline, and you’re run over -down a few buy-ins before you know it.

The above is true for No-Limit Hold’em, and things get even more complex in PLO. More hole cards amplify the action and introduce extra layers of nuance, making the game even more volatile and difficult to control.

Becoming proficient in heads-up play – whether in NLH or PLO – requires study, discipline, and mental stamina. But the effort usually pays off. Strong HU fundamentals don’t just help you hold your own in 1-on-1 battles – they also sharpen your overall understanding of poker mechanics, which often translates to better results in other formats.

Unsurprisingly, the best way to improve your HU skills is through solver work. Solvers teach you proper preflop ranges, postflop decision trees, and help refine your in-game intuition. In NLH, access to heads-up GTO study tools has been widely available for years. For PLO, however, the same couldn’t be said -until recently.

Comprehensive Solver Calculations for PLO

You may have already encountered mentions of PLO Genius on our website. It’s a cloud-based, web poker solver that helps you study all aspects of PLO. The tool provides GTO strategies for various formats—heads-up, shorthanded, MTTs, live cash games, and All-in or Fold—in both PLO and PLO5, across different stack sizes and rake structures.

Considering the massive number of possible hand combinations in PLO, the PLO Genius library is an ever-growing database, with new calculations added every month.

One of the most recent additions is a full section of 100BB solutions for heads-up games.

A Clear Game Plan for Heads-Up PLO

Studying poker effectively means knowing which shortcuts to take – and the last decade of poker tool development has taught us which ones truly matter.

One of the most powerful shortcuts is grouping board textures based on their core characteristics. In total, there are 22,100 possible flop combinations, which shrink to 1,755 when isomorphic boards are grouped together. The PLO Genius team has categorized them into seven distinct groups (each containing between 112 and 392 flops), allowing you to quickly find the one you’re interested in – and compare it with similar boards.

This kind of structure enables both efficient comparison between drastically different textures and deeper analysis of subtle variations between similar flops.

Crucially, all of these calculations are available for single-raised pots, 3-bet pots, and 4-bet pots – covering nearly all scenarios you’ll encounter in 100BB heads-up games.

Study and Train at the Same Time

Knowing what to do and actually applying it in real games are two very different things. That’s why PLO Genius includes a Train mode, which lets you practice what you’ve studied in simulated gameplay – on up to four tables at once. It’s an engaging way to test your skills under pressure, even for high-volume grinders.

How to access the HU content? Everything mentioned above (and much more) is available under the regular subscription plan: $99/month, or $59/month if you choose the annual option.

The PLO Genius team continues to expand the solver library, with plenty of calculations still in progress. They’re also open to feedback – you can share your thoughts or suggestions directly via the official PLO Genius Discord.
