New Celtic gaffer Wilfried Nancy is already coming under fire after losing his first game and faces a tough task bouncing back with a win over Roma at Parkhead in the UEFA Europa League tonight.
Some of the reaction to Sunday’s 2-1 defeat by Hearts has been ridiculously over the top with a few pundits and fans already writing the Frenchman off.
But it’s clear there will be some teething troubles as he implements a new style of play and that could play into Roma’s hands tonight in Glasgow.
Celtic vs Roma top betting tips
Roma aren’t in great form themselves, having lost two in a row in Serie A, but they eased to a 2-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox earlier in the Europa League.
Celtic aren’t that much better than their reeling city rivals at the moment so backing the Italian side to do the Old Firm double looks good value at a best 5/4 with SkyBet.
Daizen Maeda’s relentless pressing often leads to a few cards, especially in Europe, and he was booked in the loss to Midtjylland earlier in the campaign.
The Japanese striker is 3/1 to go into the book tonight and that could be worth a punt.
Basel vs Aston Villa
Aston Villa are 4/1 favourites with most firms to win the Europa League this season and they head into tonight’s clash with Basel in amazing form.
Saturday’s 2-1 win over Arsenal saw Unai Emery’s men move to within three points of the Premier League leaders and they’ve won seven in a row in all competitions.
Villa have also claimed four victories from their five Europa League games so far, although their only slip did come on the road away to Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles.
Emery made plenty of changes that night and I’d imagine he’ll do the same tonight amidst a busy domestic fixture schedule.
Emiliano Buendia could start after a matchwinning contribution off the bench on Saturday and is 5/4 at Paddy Power to score or assist.
Basel only have six points from five Europa League games but both those wins did come at home. That suggests they won’t be a pushover and combining BTTS with over 2.5 goals pays 17/20 at Coral.
Ferencvaros vs Rangers
Danny Rohl has improved Rangers’ domestic results since taking the reins from Russell Martin but they continue to look ragged in the Europa League and now face in-form Ferencvaros in Hungary.
Gers finally got a point on the board last time out against Braga but it felt like a defeat after they blew a 1-0 lead against a side reduced to 10 men.
Ferencvaros are unbeaten in their five Europa League games and will be desperate for another win tonight as they look to seal a last-16 place.
The Hungarians are 5/6 favourites with most firms but you can boost the odds to 23/20 at Bet365 by adding on over 1.5 goals.
Striker Barnabas Varga will fancy his chances against Rohl’s injury-hit defence and he’s a decent 5/4 with SkyBet for anytime scorer.
The Hungary international is particularly strong in the air so it could pay to back him to score a header at 9/2 with Bet365.
