Uzbekistan made history by qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since gaining independence 34 years ago, after losing only once in 15 qualifiers. However, they faced a challenge when Timur Kapadze resigned, and they needed a new head coach for the tournament.
They approached Fabio Cannavaro, Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning captain and Ballon d’Or recipient, who has had a diverse coaching career and was prepared to tackle the task of managing a nation new to the international football scene.
