Assistant coach Anthony Barry is employing psychological, tactical, and physical profiling to give Thomas Tuchel’s England team an advantage at the World Cup.
A decade ago, Anthony Barry’s life was quite different. Now the England assistant coach, dedicated to helping Thomas Tuchel secure a World Cup victory next summer, was once playing for Accrington Stanley in League Two. Nearing the end of a career spent in the lower divisions of the Football League and non-league, he embarked on a transformative journey by taking a voluntary role as the coach for Accrington’s Under-16s.
“It was in the evenings, on a third of a pitch, doing 11 v 11 with flat balls and not enough bibs,” Barry recalls, smiling. “I was captivated. I found my calling and imagined its potential. I’m certain no one else could see it. But dreams are like that.”
