The San Antonio Spurs will be without star player Victor Wembanyama for a few weeks due to a calf strain. Wembanyama had an MRI on Sunday and will be reevaluated in two to three weeks. The team is being cautious to prevent any major issues.
“Obviously, we’ve seen around this league recently, the calf-tightness thing is not something you want to take lightly,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said Sunday. “Don’t want to push it there.”
Wembanyama missed Sunday’s game against the Sacramento Kings because of left calf tightness. He was spotted in the locker room with a small sleeve on his calf, showing no signs of discomfort.
The 21-year-old is having a strong season, averaging career-high numbers with 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 4.0 assists, and leading the NBA with 3.6 blocks per game. His improved play makes him a contender for both the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards.
With Wembanyama out, Luke Kornet took the starting spot, scoring 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting and adding three blocks in the win over the Kings. The Spurs are performing well, with a 9-4 record, placing them fifth in the Western Conference standings.
