Sports bettors can be easily triggered these days, even by a performance that doesn’t meet their specific expectations. Jimmy Butler, the Golden State Warriors forward, recently faced a frustrated gambler’s ire due to such a situation.
A heckler posted a video on social media where he rolled down his car window and shouted at Butler. The gambler claimed he lost a $3,000 parlay because Butler did not score over 30 points in a game. The incident appeared bizarre and comical, with the gambler ending the video by accusing Butler of working for Vegas, a wild assertion.
While the NBA has dealt with issues of players underperforming or skipping games to affect betting outcomes, accusing Butler of purposely failing a $3,000 parlay for the sake of betting operators is far-fetched. Butler is not alone in being targeted by disgruntled gamblers online. As more people nationwide place bets, a certain group has begun to think it’s acceptable to harass athletes over their gambling outcomes.
Despite the humor in Butler’s case, more serious incidents have occurred online. Social media users have issued death threats and shared athletes’ addresses, warning them of potential harm. It’s concerning that it doesn’t always take a poor performance to upset bettors; sometimes, athletes who had no impact on a wager have been targeted simply for defeating an opposing team or player.
