Following an eight-week break since their last home match, the non-league club returned to their stadium to honor the memory of an opponent.
A persistent pug repeatedly nudges a ball under the feet of individuals lined up in the clubhouse for half-time refreshments: alcohol and soft drinks from the bar; tea, coffee, and Bovril from the hatch. “We’re a very good counterattacking team,” one patron comments. “But we have to take it to them.”
Outside, the large clock above the Jack Fisk Stand remains incorrectly stuck at 6pm, continuing its ongoing neglect of timekeeping responsibilities for the past two seasons. “It’s as much of a normal Saturday as it can be,” notes Wingate & Finchley vice-chair, Joe Sharpe. “But I don’t think there’s any joy.”
