Stephen Crystal’s Swedish Sojourn: A Blend of Culinary Delights, iGaming Insights, and Enduring Friendships

My recent journey to Sweden was an exquisite blend of cultural immersion, professional exploration, and the deepening of personal bonds that transcend the mere confines of the iGaming industry. From the historic streets of Stockholm to the serene landscapes of the north, my Swedish sojourn was a narrative rich with culinary adventures, industry insights, and lifelong friendships.

Day 1: A Culinary Introduction to Stockholm

My adventure began at Bakfickan, a local favorite nestled by the historic Opera House in Stockholm, where I indulged in the traditional flavors of Swedish cuisine. The day was a parade of delicacies, starting with an assortment of pickled herring, followed by a fried potato pancake topped with salmon roe, cheese, and fresh dill. The traditional Swedish meatballs, served with lingonberries and pickled cucumber, offered a comforting taste of Sweden’s rich culinary heritage. A highlight was the steak tartare, lightly seared and immensely flavorful, quickly becoming one of my favorite culinary experiences. The day concluded with the sweetness of King Oscar Sugar Cake, a perfect end to a rich and satisfying meal. Norwegian cod for dinner and the breathtaking views of Stockholm’s cityscape made my first day in Sweden unforgettable, setting the tone for a journey that promised to intertwine culinary exploration with insights into the iGaming industry.

Day 2: Rekindling Professional Ties and Friendship

The second day brought a heartwarming reunion with Staffan Lindgren, a key figure from NYX Gaming, which later became part of Scientific Games, now known as Light & Wonder. Reflecting on our first meeting around 2011/2012, during the nascent stages of iGaming in the United States, I was reminded of how Staffan not only became a pivotal contact in my professional network but also a dear friend and mentor. Our friendship, which has flourished over more than a decade, was celebrated over a meal at a Lebanese taverna, reminiscent of countless gaming conferences, shared meals, and memorable experiences, including a party cruise to Finland. For me, Staffan epitomizes the essence of a true friend and colleague, underscoring the profound connections that extend beyond professional realms.

Day 3: From Business Meetings to Ice Fishing Adventures

On the third day, I connected with Andreas Ternström of Slotmill at Grodan, a classic Swedish lunch spot renowned for its liver dish. Despite the geographical distance from the familiar margaritas and tacos at Tommy’s in San Francisco, the meal shared with Andreas was a testament to the global nature of our industry and the personal relationships that thrive within it. The day also included insightful meetings near Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s old town, before embarking on a thrilling adventure to the north for ice fishing, complemented by a sauna and ice pool dip—an invigorating experience that was both refreshing and reflective of Sweden’s stunning natural beauty.

My time in Sweden was a profound reminder of the intricate tapestry that weaves together professional growth, cultural exploration, and personal connections. By delving into the local culture, savoring the exquisite cuisine, and cherishing the people who define the essence of the iGaming industry, my Swedish journey was a vivid illustration of the importance of embracing new experiences and nurturing relationships that last a lifetime.
