Esports around the world - Japan Part II: Japan has strict gambling regulation. Japan’s Penal Code states a person who gambles or runs a gambling establishment will be criminally liable. Therefore, betting on esports is banned in Japan. In July 2018 a law was passed to legalize casinos in Japan meaning the acceptance of gambling is growing but could still be a long way off from having legalised esports betting. This clause in the Penal Code also has a large impact on the running of esports tournaments and competitions. If a team was to pay an entrance fee to a competition and then the prize money included those entrance fees, it is viewed and interpreted as the individuals are betting their property on a contest where the outcome is based on chance. This is a common model used by smaller tournament organisers in the Western hemisphere, but in Japan, it is not possible. Therefore, these competitions must rely on sponsorships or other forms of income to provide prize money. Due to this, the amateur esports scene in Japan is very small and has seen little growth. Furthermore, the Premiums Act affects the amount of prize money that can be provided. The prize money cannot exceed 20 times the value of the transaction or 100,000 Yen ($900). #esports#Japan#gaminglife#videogames
Esports around the world - Japan Part I: Japan has the third-largest gaming market in the world with 67M players, yet esports focused games struggle to gain traction in Japan and have very little presence. The reasoning behind this comes down to two key reasons; culture and strict gambling legislation. Japan’s culture isn’t geared towards esports games. Currently, Japanese players prefer to play games against a CPU rather than other players and “avoid human interaction, and they prefer avoiding a real person that disturbs them while they train”. Therefore, the most popular esports titles like League of Legends, CS:GO, Rocket League etc. often go unnoticed. The only form of esports that sees popularity within Japan is fighting games that are One VS One such as Street Fighter. This again is due to the mindset of players favouring to play by themselves and not work within a team. This is beginning to change though within younger generations of players. Players aged 16-25 in Japan have started playing games that require teamwork and communication.
